Pattern Making For Beginners

Pattern Making For Beginners
AUD $249.00
  • Duration: 3 Hours
  • Location: Sydney, NSW
In this long-term private course, you will learn the fundamentals of setting up a sewing machine, how to wind the bobbin, thread the top, sew straight lines and how to draft a pattern from a garment.

Drafting your own patterns can be daunting, most people don't know where to start or which tools are needed in order to make the process as smooth as possible. This ongoing private class will guide you through each step, from tracing the pattern from your garment, to preparing your fabric, cutting the pattern, assembling the pieces and making adjustments.

Whichever garment you choose to recreate, you will learn multiple skills and techniques which will guide you into future projects.

For this class, we will require a photo of the garment you wish to recreate. If the garment is considered advanced, we will suggest choosing a different garment.

Tips when selecting the perfect beginner garment:
- Try to avoid sleeves, if you can't, we may be able to alter the pattern to a sleeveless garment
- Avoid garments that are heavily embellished with beading/sequins
- Avoid slippery materials, as a beginner, we recommend sticking with cotton/linen/rayon fabrics

You are booking the first initial class or 3 hours. The simplest of garments will require more than three hours to complete. Depending on the complexity of your garment, you will need to return regularly to continue with the class and perhaps work on some "homework" set by your teacher in between your sessions.

Course outline:

First class - 3 hours

- Start drafting your pattern

- Learn about the symbols and use them in your pattern

- Use a variety of tools to help you create a neater finish

- Depending on the complexity of the pattern, you may reach the cutting stage

Following classes:
- You may continue to book this class until the garment is complete. If you feel comfortable undertaking some tasks at home, your teacher can suggest some "homework" before your next session, this will help you gain confidence in sewing independently but also help the process along too.

Due to the nature of this class, it is impossible to say how long your garment will take to complete, as every garment is different and each individual learns at a different pace. Upon seeing a photo of your garment, we will be able to provide you with a rough estimate of how many sessions you may need.

This course is held at Sydney Creative's art studio in Redfern. The building is occupied by talented artists, exhibitions and co-working spaces.
